Profile Information

I play these instruments...
Bb Trumpet, Flugelhorn
I perform...
Jazz Combo, Contemporary Jazz, Big Band/Swing
Playing Level:
Semi-pro
My preferred equipment:
Factory-built stock instrument, Modified/Custom Horn
I started playing trumpet:
December 25, 1968
My most memorable trumpet experience:
I went to Berklee for a summer and one night I decided to attend an open jam session. I walked in the door and the place was packed with musicians. A rhythm section was playing this mad funk groove...so I threw down my case and started to blow. The place went nuts! After the song ended, I packed up my horn and as I was heading to sit down, some guy called me over...it was an instructor. He said, "Nice job man, but you were supposed to sign in and wait to be called". I was like, OOPS!...We both laughed and he said sometimes you just have to go with the moment. For sure...
Personal trumpet aspiration:
To always stay connected to great sound
About Me:
I front a 16 piece big band as the vocalist ("Mike Lyons and the Blue Moon Orchestra")...I was originally playing second trumpet as well, but found it was becoming a bit hectic blowing, singing and announcing at the shows. I recently purchased a Harrelson 909 custom trumpet that plays beautifully and is a work of art. Truly inspiring... I also have a recording studio in my home. I've recorded and produced several records in a variety of styles of music, ranging from big band to acoustic rock and rap. Currently, I have been focusing my energies on my alternative healing business, Healing Hands of Rhode Island, which is a Reiki practice. Visit www.healinghandsri.com for more info.

Thanks Mike! I would be more than happy to dep sometime. If your ever in Boston, email me and you can check out some of my gigs if you want. Those berklee open jam sessions are really something, what year did that story happen?

wow! I bet berklee has changed a bit since then! I'm in my 3rd semester there, but I'm back in Perth (australia) until the Fall. Would be interesting to have seen what it was like back then... hopefully more organized?!!

MIKE, I ACTUALLY LEARNED TO USE MY RIGHT HAND. IT WAS CUMBERSOME AT FIRST BUT THE OLD RULE APPLIES. (PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE)

Hi Mike,
I see you asked another player about the horn pictured on his page.
I forget the players name now, but the horn looks like a Monette that was custom built for a great New Orleans player, I think its called the Elysian and was honored by "George Bush Jr" as a Nation treasure, monument or was given the key to the city or something. Heres a Pic from Dave's site...

Hi Mike,

Enjoy your vocals, playin' and the Blue Moon Orchestra. Put some mp3s on this site so more folks can enjoy your great stuff!

Best regards, Blaine

Saaaalute Bro :-)

Same here, a 1992 Heritage & a 2001 Sporty, that's my chop job...I'll be working on some pics later, after I get it painted.....We'll have to putt to the middle & share some notes some day :-)

Now 'm going to have to see if I can play left handed...NEVER seen anybody do that :-D

Keep the notes & the scoot mellow :-)
Mike
